Practice Tips and Guidelines

1. Practice hand gestures, vocal variety and body movement.

2. Practice in the room where the presentation will be made, if
possible.

3. Practice with all visual aids and technical equipment.
(computer/projector etc.)

4. Practice your response to anticipated questions.

5. Practice in front of your peers to get their evaluations.

6. Practice with a video camera and critique the performance.

7. Practice your segment standing up, out loud, just as if the
audience was present.

8. If you use humor, practice telling the story to other people, so
you know it perfectly.
Did they laugh? If not, don't use that story.

9. Break your presentation down into separate segments.
Instead of trying to learn them all at the same time,
work on one segment at a time. When you've mastered that
segment, move on to the next. Put them all together for a
complete presentation.

10. If you're going to use a microphone, learn how to use it
properly and practice with it.

11. Practice over an extended period of time. Don't wait until the
last minute and try to master everything at once.

12. Practice the day of the presentation in the presentation room.

13. Practice with as few notes as possible, to appear natural.

14. Practice, but don't memorize your speech.

15. Practice with your notes in place, but don't just read from
them.

16. Practice your opening and closing the most. You want to
know both perfectly.

17. One hour of preparation and practice for each minute of
presentation.

18. Practice helps to get rid of those "ah's," "uh's" and "you
knows." Get feedback on this aspect of your speech.
